The implications of this innovation are profound, particularly in the context of the booming AI landscape, driven in part by OpenAI’s impressive ChatGPT and the Stable Diffusion image generator, both of which demand substantial processing power, typically found in power-hungry Nvidia graphics processors and hosted in the cloud.

The two new chips, namely Qualcomm’s X Elite chip for PCs and laptops and the Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 for high-end Android smartphones, are set to change the AI game. They offer accelerated AI model processing, positioning them as a potential battleground for premium Android phones and Apple’s iPhones, which also continually integrate new AI features.

One of the standout features of Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon chip is its ability to execute AI tasks significantly faster than its predecessor. For instance, the generation of an image now takes less than a second, down from 15 seconds last year. This leap in performance is a game-changer, as it translates to users experiencing swifter and more responsive AI applications.

Their capacity to handle more extensive AI models, even those as large as 10 billion parameters, sets these chips apart. This is a notable step forward, although it still needs to catch up to the colossal AI models like OpenAI’s GPT-3, which boasts about 175 billion parameters. Qualcomm’s executives argue that these AI models can be effectively run on devices if the chips are equipped with sufficient processing power and memory.

Furthermore, running language models locally on devices is faster and more private than cloud-based solutions. In addition to supporting third-party models like Meta’s Llama 2, Qualcomm is also developing its own AI models, emphasizing its commitment to advancing AI capabilities.

One remarkable demonstration of this technology is the capability to run the Stable Diffusion AI model, which can generate images based on textual input, like descriptions. This powerful feature could find applications in a wide range of creative and practical areas, including content generation and image editing.

Qualcomm envisions a future where personal voice assistants, for example, could use AI models directly on the device for straightforward queries. At the same time, more complex questions are routed to cloud-based, high-performance computers. This approach is expected to optimize efficiency and performance.

Collaboration with tech giants like Microsoft is pivotal to Qualcomm’s vision, as they work closely to ensure their chips are optimized for AI software. By expanding AI capabilities on edge devices, they aim to reduce reliance on expensive cloud-based inference, potentially saving significant costs.

The Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 chip is slated to feature in premium Android devices costing over $500 from brands like Asus, Sony, and OnePlus early next year. It’s essential to note that features developed for these high-end chips often trickle down to other devices, making AI technology more accessible.

In addition to mobile devices, Qualcomm is making a foray into the PC world with the X Elite chip, designed for laptops and desktops. Based on Arm architecture and integrating technology from Qualcomm’s acquisition of Nuvia, this chip promises to challenge Intel’s x86 chips.

It’s expected to debut in laptops with Oryon cores, slated for release mid-next year. Qualcomm claims it outperforms Apple’s M2 Max chip while consuming less power, making it an attractive proposition for PC manufacturers and users.
